What PET/CT Scanning Sees
Scanning for Cancer
PET/CT scanning integrates PET and CT technologies into a single device, making it possible
to obtain both anatomical and biological data during a single exam. This integrated approach
permits accurate tumor detection and localization for a variety of cancers, including:
Scanning for Heart Disease
PET/CT scanning also enables the detection of heart disease (carotid artery disease). Heart disease is
defined as the narrowing or blockage of the carotid arteries, which are the located in the neck and
deliver oxygenated blood to the face, scalp, eyes, and brain.
Carotid artery disease is caused by atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Narrowing or blockage
of the carotid arteries can prevent blood from reaching parts of the brain. This lack of blood can cause
shortages of oxygen that can result in transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), also called mini-strokes, or strokes.
Treatment of carotid artery disease includes lifestyle changes, medications, or surgical procedures.
Scanning for Brain Disorders
PET/CT scanning technology allows physicians and psychologists to take a deeper look into the mind of a patient. PET/CT can assist in the screening and early detection
of common brain disorders, including:
